Doris Kearns Goodwin, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln," will be awarded the Nichols-Chancellor's Medal during her address to graduating seniors on May 7. The address is a part of the Senior Day festivities to honor graduates before the commencement ceremony on May 8.

Goodwin will be awarded the prize, one of Vanderbilt University's most prestigious awards, for her distinguished literary works. The Nichols-Chancellor Medal was originally created by Vanderbilt alumnus Ed Nichols to honor the most forward-thinking scholars of the 21st century.

"Doris Kearns Goodwin is a brilliant communicator who has illuminated U.S. history for millions of readers," said Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos in a recent press release with Vanderbilt University News Services. "Her genius for bringing history alive merits this high honor and we are thrilled that our graduating seniors will hear from such a wise adviser as they prepare to make this life transition."

The speech marks the 200th anniversary of President Lincoln's birth and is part of a national effort to celebrate the occasion. Goodwin's speech follows those of previous years by such individuals as Condoleezza Rice and Laura Bush.

The Senior Day address and award presentation will take place on Alumni lawn at 10 a.m.
