COLUMN: Campus needs to bond together to prevent crime

One of the rants in Monday’s Hustler caught my eye: “When did Vandy become a crime-ridden hellhole?” While this question exaggerates the current situation to some extent, I have to say that, for the most part, I agree with its sentiments.

EDITORIAL: Students are talking, Vanderbilt Dining is listening.

Vanderbilt Dining’s new program, Eat the World, Save the Earth, is a big step in the right direction for the university. It represents a commitment to several principles with which we want our university to be associated.

AROUND THE LOOP

What are your impressions of Vanderbilt's political climate?

"I went to the Bush protest yesterday, and it was really great to see so many people out there. Some were in support of the president, others were protesting, but what really matters is that people cared enough to take a stand."
Madeleine Fentress, Freshman, Arts and Science.

COLUMN: Schools must reform exams to restore faith in diploma

In the Grease song “Beauty School Drop-Out,” an angel convinces Frenchy to go back to high school in order to save her career and prevent her from working in a malt shop. Fifty years later, in a world where high school diplomas have lost considerable value, a diploma alone provides only limited opportunities, of which being a waitress at the corner store would not be too shabby.

COLUMN: U.N. Ambassador deserves confirmation

Within the next couple of weeks, the Senate Foreign Relations committee will convene to decide the fate of U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, who has been on the job for a year now after an August 2005 recess appointment by President Bush. In early 2005, Bolton had difficulty getting confirmed by the Senate due to some past criticism of the United Nations and reports that he verbally abused past employees.

COLUMN: Pride in Greek party scene is misplaced

I have been spurred to respond to last Friday’s article, “New social policies threaten party school reputation” by Sara Tabor. I have no doubt that I will be among an extreme minority in my views, but nonetheless, I feel compelled to put forth my view for your consideration.

EDITORIAL: Student publications can evoke change

Every edition of The Vanderbilt Hustler boasts the words “The Voice of Vanderbilt since 1888.” This is not just a catchy alliteration; it is a role we take very seriously.

As “The Voice of Vanderbilt,” we are continuing a nearly 120-year tradition of representing the activities and perspectives of the Vanderbilt community. No other publication reaches Vanderbilt students as often as The Hustler, and we realize the responsibility that this position holds.

COLUMN: Airline experience yields appreciation for restrictions

I will have to ask forgiveness for my abject lack of sympathy for the sentiments expressed last Wednesday in Wynne Duong’s column, “On My Mind.” Beside those of Duong’s concerns with no grounding in truth, those with factual basis were largely petty and insipid.
