Following the release of additional details from the alleged June 23 sexual assault during Chris Boyd’s plea hearing earlier this month, an alumnae group began an initiative aimed at eliciting a stronger university stance against the sexual violence culture on campus. The university today issued a response to InsideVandy.
Text messages read during Chris Boyd’s Sept. 13 court appearance have caused some confusion over the role Vanderbilt starting quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels may have played in the alleged rape that occurred in Gillette Hall this past June. The text messages, read by prosecutor Tom Thurman, were exchanged between Boyd and former players Brandon Vandenburg and Corey Batey on the night of the incident.
Vanderbilt announced today that Chris Boyd has been dismissed from the football team and athletic program. Boyd pled guilty Friday to one count of being an accessory after the fact. He also agreed to a one-year probation and to testify against his four former teammates who were directly involved in the crime.
Vanderbilt wide receiver Chris Boyd plead guilty Friday morning to a charge of "criminal intent" to be an accessory after the fact after reaching a deal with prosecutors that will allow him to avoid felony conviction. Boyd originally was charged with being an accessory after the fact in the incident involving the alleged rape of a 21-year-old student in Gillette Hall on June 23.
The consumption of alcohol and drugs contributed to the June 23 incident in a Vanderbilt University dormitory that has resulted in aggravated rape and sexual batter charges against four former Vanderbilt football players.
Jaborian “Tip” McKenzie, one of four former Commodore football players indicted Aug. 9 on multiple charges of aggravated rape and sexual battery, now plays for the Alcorn State University Braves. McKenzie recorded three kickoff returns in the Braves’ game against Mississippi State this past Saturday for a total of 80 yards, according to the Alcorn State athletics website.
Students who wore Green Dots stickers to the season opening football game versus Ole Miss on Aug. 29 might have been confused when the stickers seemingly disappeared at the second home game versus Austin Peay on Sept. 7. According to Associate Dean of Students Sandy Stahl, the stickers were intended as a one-time campaign, and the Green Dots program is now focusing on more substantive education efforts around campus.

Student Body President Isaac Escamilla Friday afternoon issued a thank you message via email to the Vanderbilt community on the success of the Green Dot initiative—an effort by Vanderbilt to unite the community against campus violence. Escamilla's full message:
One day prior to the opening of the 2013 Vanderbilt Football season, InsideVandy reached out to students to gauge the campus mood and student reactions to the alleged sexual assault that occurred in Gillette Hall on June 23.
Vanderbilt Student Government and a coalition of Vanderbilt student organizations are encouraging all those attending the university’s football season opener against the University of Mississippi on Thursday, Aug. 29, to wear a “green dot” to emphasize shared responsibility in campus safety.
All four of the former Vanderbilt Football players facing aggravated rape and sexual assault charges have pleaded not guilty, the Associated Press reports. Chris Boyd, who has been indicted on a count of accessory after the fact, has also pleaded not guilty.
Last year, wide receiver Chris Boyd put a couple of exclamation points on a solid season, earning SportsCenter’s top play of the day for his acrobatic touchdown catches against Tennessee and NC State. With the 2013-14 season just around the corner, it remains uncertain whether the rising star will see the field at all during his redshirt junior year. Charged with assisting defendants accused of rape and sexual assault, Boyd was indicted and suspended indefinitely from the football team.
During the summer, Metro police began a sex crimes investigation regarding an alleged incident in Gillette Hall. InsideVandy brings you a timeline of major events thus far.
Three additional indictments were handed down today in connection with the alleged June 23 incident in a Vanderbilt dorm room. Chris Boyd, a standout receiver on the Commodore football team, was among the persons indicted, according to Metro police.
Today the Davidson County District Attorney charged Chris Boyd, a member of the Vanderbilt football team with accessory after the fact related to the incident that occurred in a Vanderbilt residence hall June 23. The charges follow those announced Aug. 9 stemming from the same incident. All of these allegations, including those brought today, are deeply troubling, and we take them very seriously.
JaBorian 'Tip' McKenzie, one of four former Vanderbilt football players indicted on aggravated sexual assault and battery charges, has pled not guilty. He waived his option for an August 21 arraignment hearing late Tuesday when he entered the plea.
The four ex-Commodore football players connected with a Metro police sex crimes investigation have been charged on multiple criminal counts, according to a Metro press release. One player has been taken into custody, while “efforts are underway” to bring the other three in as well, the press release states.
The Vanderbilt Athletics department Wednesday notified student athletes that Tin Roof is now off-limits. Visiting the local student hot-spot will now be a violation of athletic department rules for athletes and will result in disciplinary action.
The names and identities of four former Vanderbilt University football players under investigation for sex crimes were tonight released by the university. Following the June 23 incident, the players were removed from the team and suspended from the Vanderbilt campus.
Although no new information has been publicly released by either the university or Metro Police, a local sports talk show host reported new alleged details about the ongoing sex crimes investigation connected to four Vanderbilt football players on Wednesday.
